This variety is one of just 2 documented hand-made, die struck counterfeit gold half eagle varieties with a Dahlonega 'D' mintmark, and the other variety, 1842-D, was made by the same counterfeiter, along with an 1843-O and 1844-O (and maybe other varieties that have yet to be documented). This is only the 4th example I've seen of this variety and all have been of comparable poor quality. Overall, I don't get counterfeit half eagles very often and they usually don't last long due to how scarce they generally are.
This example exhibits strong details but chatter marks across the copper or brass planchet.
