This is 1 of 2 documented 1858-dated hand-made, die struck counterfeit quarter eagle varieties. This variety was struck on a brass planchet and gold plated, and is diagnostic with its small and somewhat widely spaced date. Some of ther reverse lettering was not well-spaced, thus overlapping each other, and some letters were repunched.
This example is as close to a GEM as you can find with any contemporary counterfeit U.S. gold coin. All of the original gold plating is in tact. Some dark, copper(?) spots are noted on the obverse and a dark spot on the reverse. If you are assembling a high-grade contemporary counterfeit type set or more expansive quarter-eagle set, you probably don't want to pass-up on this example.
shows a reasonably attractive obverse (it looks better in hand) with the gold plating bubbled-surface, however the reverse has some wear, tear, and likely test-scratches. Overall this is an affordable example of this scarcer of the two 1858-varieties. This example was also once owned by renowned collector Mike Ringo.
