Singleton variety. Very rare transfer die counterfeit (currently 2 examples documented) with a Branch mint mintmark during a time when silver coins were commonly in circulation out west but rare out east (post-Civil War, reconstruction era), suggestive that this is counterfeit was made out west. This second example confirms that the obverse die marker is a raised dot in the field right of the date and under Liberty's foot. The second example recently documented is in similar condition to this example, further suggesting this variety was commonly made in lower-grade appearanceh condition.
