This is the newest documented 1851 counterfeit gold dollar, hand-made die variety identified. It is temporarily given variety designation 'C-1' because I have not yet begun giving formal variety codes to most counterfeit U.S. gold coins. This example shows a fair amount of wear and has some scratches which were probably contemporary test-scratches to check for authenticity. However, some of the original gold plating/gilt still remains in the recesses, especially on the reverse. The letter sizes in DOLLAR, in particular the oversized LLs, are particularly diagnostic for this variety.
