This variety is one of nine documented hand-made die counterfeit gold dollars dated 1853. The quality of die workmanship on this variety was very good. The planchet is brass and over 80% of the original gold plating remains present on the surface suggestive of relatively little handling and circulation over the past 160+ years or so since it was made (probably pre-Civil War). Diagnostic pick-up-points for this variety are difficult to describe here. Only a few examples of this variety have yet been documented and its true or estimated surviving population is unknown.
