This is 1 of just 3 documented hand-made die counterfeit gold dollars dated 1854.  The scalloped stars, thin, widel-spaced denticles, oversized date and thin wreath are especially diagnostic features on this variety.  This example shows a fair bit of the underlying brass planchet with about 25-50% of the original gold plating remaining scattered across the surface.  Despite the identifiable pick-up-points described above, the quality of die workmanship on this variety was very good and not easy to detect on a 13.4 mm planchet.  This example does have a notable indent in the center of the obverse largely hidden in Liberty's hair, possibly a contemporary check for authenticity.
