This variety is 1 of 5 documented hand-made die counterfeit gold dollar varieties dated 1856.  This variety is known on both brass and copper planchets, this one being a copper planchet.  This variety is particularly notable because the counterfeiter used the wrong, small head portrait style (Type 2) associated with this date which should instead have been a large head.  Little or none of the original gold plating remains on this example.  Central details on the reverse are weak
